HEALTHCARE

Hospitals in Chiang Mai are very good, with international private hospitals, competent government hospitals, and speciality clinics. Healthcare in urban Thailand is also surprisingly affordable when considering the level of care received. Ping Wali is located next to the international standard Bangkok Hospital, a private care facility, while Maharaj Hospital is one of the top government hospitals. At these Chiang Mai hospitals the healthcare and facilities are considered by expats to be on a par with, or even sometimes better than, what they receive at home. Medical treatments and procedures, as well as general healthcare can cost as little as 10% of what one would pay at a premier western hospital.
UNIVERSITIES
Chiang Mai has a number of highly regarded universities that welcome students from all over the world.
CHIANG MAI UNIVERSITY
Chiang Mai University (“CMU”) is a public research university that was founded in 1964.
The university was the first institution of higher education in northern Thailand and the first provincial university in Thailand. CMU has a strong emphasis on engineering, science, agriculture and medicine, and has four campuses, three in Chiang Mai and one in Lamphun. A majority of CMU’s enrollment comes from graduate and professional students, with the school ranking third nationally in academics and fifth in research according to the Thailand Office of the Higher Education.
PAYAP UNIVERSITY
Payap University (“PU”) is a private institution founded by the Church of Christ in Thailand.
PU is a founding member of the Association of Private Higher Education Institutions in Thailand, and an active member of the Association of Christian Universities and Colleges in Asia, as well as the Association of Southeast Asian Institutions of Higher Learning. PU is a Liberal Arts and Pre-Professional School offering 22 Thai language degrees in 12 departments. PU also has an international student body with nearly 30 countries represented across two campuses in Chiang Mai.
RAJAMANGALA UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY LANNA
Rajamangala University of Technology Lanna (“RUTL”) is a science and technology university in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand.
It offers certificate (vocational), advanced certificate (vocational), undergraduate, and master's degrees. RUTL was founded in 1957 under a royal charter granted King Bhumibol Adulyadej under the name Vocational Institute. In 1975, it was considered a campus of the Institute of Technology and Vocational Education. In 1988 it was named Rajamangala Institute of Technology (RIT), Northern Campus. To serve the needs of people in Thailand and other countries and to meet international standards, RIT developed its administration structure and education management and became Rajamangala University of Technology (RMUT) in 2003. RMUT consists of nine universities with six campuses in the north of Thailand: Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lampang, Tak, Phitsanulok, and Nan.
CHIANG MAI RAJABHAT UNIVERSITY
Chiang Mai Rajabhat University (“CMRU”) is a university in northern Thailand under the Royal Thai Ministry of Education.
Founded in 1924 as an agricultural teacher training college, it later became Chiang Mai Teachers College before the king declared all teachers colleges to be Rajabhat Institutes, allowing it offer majors and degree programs in non-teaching fields. CMRU has four campuses, three in Chiang Mai and the fourth in Mae Hong Son.
INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS
Chiang Mai has a number of highly regarded international schools that will take a student from kindergarten through high school.
PREM TINSULANONDA INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL
Prem Tinsulanonda International School (“PTIS”) is an international boarding and day school for boys and girls aged 3 – 19 years of age.
The school opened in August 2001 and was designed and created by Thai architect and artist, ML Tridhosyuth Devakul. The school is located on a 100-acre campus, and has approximately 420 students coming from over 35 countries. PTIS is authorised by the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IB) Geneva, to offer the Diploma Program (IB DP) for Grades 11 and 12, the Middle Years Program (IB MYP) for Grades 6 - 10 and the Primary Years Program (IB PYP) for Kindergarten to Grade 5. PTIS is the first school in SE Asia to offer all four IB programs, as it also offers the new IBCC – International Baccalaureate Career-related Certificate. The school is also accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS), the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) and the Thai Ministry of Education and is a member of the International Schools Association of Thailand (ISAT) and Boarding Schools Association (BSA) of the United Kingdom. PITS is widely acknowledged as the best international school in Chiang Mai and one of the best in Thailand.
AMERICAN PACIFIC INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL
American Pacific International School (“APIS”) is a privately owned boarding school in Chiang Mai, Thailand with a kindergarten, elementary school, middle school, and high school.
The school operates on two campuses, with American Pacific International Kindergarten (“APIK”) located in suburban Chiang Mai while the main boarding campus (“MBC”) is 25 kilometers from the city center. APIK has pre-nursery to grade 1 and the MBC has grades 1-12. The teaching staff of APIS mainly originates from the United States, with some from Australia, Thailand and Canada. The school offers an American-style curriculum to those aged from two to eighteen within Thailand, and is fully registered with the Royal Thai Ministry of Education. The school has been accredited by The Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) from the United States.
CHIANG MAI INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL
Chiang Mai International School (“CMIS”) is a K-12 International school founded in 1954 by members of the Church of Christ in Thailand.
CMIS's first priority is serving the educational needs of missionary families, while admitting international children from a variety of backgrounds, cultures, and religious beliefs. CMIS offer an English-language, American-sourced education taught from an international perspective. The school is approved by the Thai Ministry of Education, and is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and recognized by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). CMIS is also a member of the East Asian Regional Council of Overseas Schools (EARCOS), the International Schools Association of Thailand (ISAT), and the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI).
LANNA INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL
Lanna International School Thailand (“LIST”) is a British international school that was founded in 1993 to serve the Chiang Mai community and provides a non-sectarian, English language, international coeducational school.
LIST is licensed by the Thai Ministry of Education and has been fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) since 2002. The school is also a member of the East Asia Regional Council of Overseas Schools (EARCOS). In 2005 Lanna is also a Cambridge University International Examination Centre. Lanna offers its students the opportunity to gain an American High School Certificate, but also British qualifications in the form of Cambridge IGCSEs and Cambridge International AS and A levels.
NAKORNPAYAP INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL
Nakornpayap International School (“NIS”) is a non-sectarian K-12 international school founded in 1993 offering an American style curriculum, including Advanced Placement (AP) courses.
The school is fully licensed with the Thai Ministry of Education and was the just the second school in northern Thailand to be accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges from preschool through grade 12. Facilities at NIS include a full sized gymnasium, a 25-meter swimming pool, chemistry, biology and physics laboratories, a large playing field, and a full size football field.
SATIT BILINGUAL SCHOOL OF RANGSIT UNIVERSITY
Satit Bilingual School of Rangsit University (“SBS”) is a kindergarten through secondary school featuring a “unified bilingual curriculum”, allowing its students to be fluent in both Thai and English.
SBS prepares its students the Thai Ministry of Education, Cambridge IGCSE and International Baccalaureate examinations. SBS facilities include: a dormitory, an information communications technology center, science labs, a gymnasium, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a football field and a children’s playground.
